A PALAZZO IN ROME, ITALY

With our first design studio in Rome for our third year of Architecture, we delved deep into the history of Roman urbanism, history, and architecture such as the palazzo. The site was located between the Tiber River and Via Giulia. The institute became a canvas for learning about this architectural type, featuring an ambulatory courtyard structure. Lessons unfolded on the organization of space – the ground floor dedicated to secondary uses and support functions, while the first floor, the Piano Nobile, hosted pivotal events and essential spaces. Navigating the intricacies of courtyard resolution became a captivating challenge, involving single, double, or even triple column pilasters in the corners. The ample site offered numerous options for palazzo placement, leading to a strategic decision to optimize the institute within a square shape. The formal gardens extended towards the Tiber River, creating a microcosm illustrating the interdependence of the city and nature. Influential precedents, including Palazzo Farnese, Villa Farnesina, Palazzo della Cancelleria, and Chiostro del Bramante, shaped and inspired the design approach.
