MUSEUM OF LATIN-AMERICAN ART IN MIAMI BEACH
I chose to design a Museum of Latin-American Art on Miami Beach, because it would make that final year at college much more enjoyable knowing that my final culmination is a reflection of who I am and where I come from. First, the typology was one of my favorites to work on in school as it one of the grandest expressions of architecture that a society can produce, and on a scale difficult to rival. The museum's subject is of Latin-American art, which could express not only my Colombian background but also that of all my friends and extended family back home; Cuban, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Argentinian, Ecuadorian, Nicaraguan, etc. And finally Miami Beach, full of its Spanish and Art Deco architecture that I grew accustomed to, but also where I grew up. The last piece to really tie it together was exploring resiliency in design. Since I can remember Miami Beach suffered from flooding either because of heavy rains, king tides, or hurricanes, and now with sea level on the rise, Buildings on these barrier islands are going to have to be built in response to the challenges posed.
There is so much to be said about my thesis, but I had a great time working on it. If you're reading this you're welcome to ask me any questions about it! :)
