A NEO-ROMANESQUE HOTEL IN D.C.

In the initial half of the fall semester in South Bend, our focus was on crafting a Master Plan for the area between the Capitol building and Union Station. Drawing from a mental library enriched by experiences abroad, the group adeptly incorporated precedents for market spaces, galleries, plazas, and the intricate relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary arteries. Transitioning to the second half of the semester, our exploration delved into the realm of hotel design. Opting for a smaller Neo-Romanesque-style hotel, inspired by the prevalent architectural style in D.C., allowed for an increased window-to-wall ratio, maximizing sunlight and views in the hotel rooms. Prioritizing sustainability, we employed tools like SketchUp’s Safaira for energy modeling studies. Utilizing Richardsonian precedents for elevational composition and drawing inspiration from Lutyens for creating a distinctive top floor aedicule on the front elevation.
