AN AFFORDABLE HOUSE IN SOUTH BEND, IN

This studio presented a unique challenge by focusing on the scale of residential design for homes under 1500 sqft. Collaborating with Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph, our mission was to replace the existing HfH catalog with designs crafted by Notre Dame students. The initial phase involved individual designs, with the tight lot constraints dictating a distinctive house width of 24 ft, allowing for a driveway and an optional one-car garage. The resulting house, just under 1500 sqft, boasted 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Transitioning to the second part of the semester, the studio coalesced into groups with similar home designs, giving rise to "The Solarium" design, named for its sunlit dining room in the rear. The project aimed to deliver comprehensive construction drawings for HfH families, with my responsibilities centering on framing, sections like stairs, and porch detailing. This studio provided invaluable insights into modern American home construction and building techniques, showcasing our commitment to impactful design for community welfare.
